I recently did a free survey, using Survey Monkey, to better understand teenagers' use of social media and gaming. The free tool allows you to analyse 100 responses, so this is based on a fairly small sample size. But, I think the results are fairly illuminating. If you are on one of my UKIE Advanced Social Media courses in September, then you will get to see the full results.
In the meantime, here is a couple of interesting findings:
- Girls are just more social than boys (no surprises there I guess). Their use of social media is greater across all social channels, but girls are particularly higher in their use of Tumblr, Vine, Instagram and Pinterest. You could argue that these are the more visual, creative channels that allow for more free expression.

Now, let's have a look at gaming. This is the area where the sharpest contrast between boys and girls exist. There is a large dominance for XBox amongst boys, whilst girls are much more inclined to play on their tablets and smart phones. The difference is really marked. Also, PC gaming is big amongst boys and girls:
