Many thanks to one of my recent delegates (Sonum) for asking me this question. I thought you would find the answer useful (special thanks to Graham Hansell of Sitelynx for helping me with this answer too)...
The question was - what is the difference between SMO & SMM. Graham's definition is below...
The way to think about it, is that SMO is using social media to drive links which will drive SEO. Let’s say that you ran a twitter promotion that encouraged people to retweet a link to your web site in order to win a prize, that would be SMO as it was using social media to improve the SEO of your web site. Don’t forget external links are one of the key drivers of search rankings and now Google etc pay much more attention to links from social media than they used to...
Social Media Optimization - is direct response promotion with the aim to generate traffic and resulting conversions on a website from Social Media & Networks, and is therefore related to SEO and with the growth of Social Signals in natural search algorithms is now seen as complimentary to many SEO programs
Social Media Marketing - Tends to be brand marketing lead, related to influencing and communication with a target market through Social Media & Networking. It tends to be that the "call to action" will reside in one of the Social Networks rather than moving people out of the network and on to another web or mobile site.
Thanks for your clarification, it helped a lot. My friend has recently been interested in marketing crm and got me fairly interested as well. What do you think is the most effective way of helping a business market themselves? I'd enjoy any feedback you may have, thanks!

The use of both social media optimization and social media marketing should be taken into account every time you are posting in your social media account. In that case, you can hit two birds with one stone. You may ignite and keep the conversation flowing in your social media account and you can also convince some of your customers to go and check the products/services on your website. =)

Both for me are very useful and it seem that they only have a little bit of differences but both useful in SEO.

Quite interesting !It's actually a good idea to shoot for success with a winery website using SEO. The niche is not that difficult to break into because the competition isn't very stiff.

I rarely leave comments, however i did some searching and wound up here Nick Baggott's CRM and Digital Marketing Blog: SEO v SMO v SMM. And I actually do have some questions for you if it's allright. Could it bee only me or does it look as if like a few of the responses look like they are coming from brain dead people? :-P And, if you are writing at other sites, I would lije to follow everything new you have to post. Could you list of all of your community sites like your Facebook page, twitter feed, oor linkedin profile?
