Wow! What an Olympics. As I am fortunate enough to live close to London, I was able to savour the incredible atmosphere at a range of Olympic events.
Gold medals for atmosphere to the Aquatics centre and Olympic stadium for athletics
Events that exceeded my expectations as a fan - hockey and handball
The real winner was the Olympic park as a whole, the games makers, the military helpers, the free wifi and the incredible architecture.
2 sponsors made the most of the Olympic park for me - the Samsung 3D cinema was the best 3D experience i have witnessed 9showing 3D highlights of the Opening Ceremony and the previous day's highlights). Whilst the Coke Beatbox was a excellent brand experience, which my 13 year old son loved, which had the added bonus of a photo with a real Olympic torch and a free limited edition bottle of Cole on the way out. Other sponsors were for me, anonymous. Yes McDonald's built the largest outlet in the world in the park and it sure was busy, but did they enhance their brand in any way?
Thanks to Socialbakers - here are some highlights from their review of the Olympics from a social media point of view:
Biggets growth in Facebook likes for athletes - Phelps, Ennis, US Gymnast Gabrielle Douglas, UK Diver Tom Daley and then Usain Bolt. Phelps gained 682,000 followers taking him over 6 million.
The most tweeted about athletes were Phelps, Lochte, Bolt, Daley and then Jess Ennis.
Interestingly Nike beat Adidas on Facebook and Twitter despite Adidas having more sponsorship exposure.
I have to say having free wifi in the stadiums was a great addition to the Olympic experience, meaning you could view the excellent BBC Olympic web site & even watch live streaming video from other sessions from your smart phone. As we sat in the Olympic stadium I was amazed by how many people were taking pics with iPads as well as surfing the web. London did us proud. An unforgettable experience and a new standard for social media usage at a major sporting event.
Here's a pic of my son Tom, making the most of the Coca Cola experience:
Olympics is well done and most of the people enjoy, social media really got a big role for it and i agree in it.In Helsinki Finland social media is really making a name for business and events like this i can say now a days it is one of the best way of online advertising.
